I would recommend buying this lens if you are looking for a worth while piece of equipment that you can use in almost any situation. The width of the lens is also surprising as close group photos and scenery shots are easily captured without having to stand back too far. When using it in a crowded music venue, I found the zoom to be most sufficient when trying to capture my subject from a certain distance away. I expected to find the lens action broken yet, to my surprise, the lens was completely unharmed and the action may have even worked better after the incident. Mine has withstood a hit from a basketball as it flew off the basketball court and into the crowds, knocking the camera from my hands. And on a personal note, I think it's "tough." As I stated earlier the lens is durable and I say this based on actual experience. This lens forgoes the fashion and encompasses utility and capability the likes of which any good photographer will appreciate. In the world of cameras it seems as though looks and features are what measures up to quality. I would be surprised to hear of anyone bad mouthing the lens simply because, it does what it was built to do and is a lot stronger then its body gives it c redit for. I have only owned it for about a month and it has truly surpassed my expectations. This lens is not only durable, but is a willing and able tool that will demonstrate its practicality time and time again if one has the chance to try it out in the field. The canon EF lens I purchased, however, breaks away from canon's other wares and shows a good side of canon that has, as of lately, altered my previous thoughts and views on their products. Keep in mind it's been very overcast and dreary this time of year but still yielded nice results (IMHO) Hope you find this helpful.Having sold canon products for about three years, it is my opinion that they make mediocre products that are over priced and usually cater to people that could care less about quality photos. I'm including a few pictures taken with this lens. On auto focus at 300m it is a little slow. I plan on using it exclusively until I know all it's quirks and master it. At the end of the day I have to say for the price this lens is a nice piece of kit. That said I was able to use it handheld and still get some nice clear pictures. Of course using a remote or a timer and a tripod, you should have some good results. Granted having image stabilization would have been nicer BUT with a bit of practice and patience I was able to get some nice pictures. However I can tell you that so far I am really enjoying the pictures I have been able to capture with this lens. So after reading the less then stellar reviews online about this lens after I bought it I thought oh oh. Now at this point I should mention that I only recently got my first dslr camera (used Canon T3i) Also I am still a newbie at photography as far as I'm concerned. The main drawback on this lens is the lack of image stabilization. Which turns out to be alright since most of the reviews I could find on YouTube weren't that good. Also unlike most of my purchases I didn't really do any research on this lens till after I bought it. Jalan Selisik, Seksyen 26, 40400, Shah Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysiaįirst thing I have to say is that the price of this lens dropped $10 a week after I received mine.kind of a bummer.
